Julianne, once the lungs are clear and the giarrdia is gone, will they
try to remove the bullet? She wasn't at one time a visitor to any of the
schools in St. Bernard's, was she? Wouldn't it be ironic if she was a
survivor of the police brutality that took place there! Lets
see...control the infection, drain the lungs, clear the giarrdia, kill
the heartworms...anything else? Call her your miracle dog! If you think
she is bad, never hesitate to take your pet to the vet. So what if they
think you're paranoid...that is what we pay them for. I nearly lost a
dog too by waiting. Glad to hear her heart is not overly enlarged. What
will be done for the lipoma and what do they think the other might be?
Said my prayers, did a dance, burnt some sage...etc.  Doing all I can
long distance from my end. NEVER lose hope...Billie

Subject: [HSLATylertown] Shadow Update

To Everyone else who is interested, here is an update on Shadow,

As many of you know, Shadow has not been doing so well and took a
turn for the worse on Friday. She was in such bad shape and was going
downhill QUICK on Friday so I took her in to the vet. She had rales &
wheezing in both lungs so they did a CBC -- her white blood count was
24,000 (BAD INFECTION!). She was already on cough suppressents and
prednisone. Then they did a chest x-ray and discovered that it wasn't
the heartworm treatment (& the dying heartworms) that was making her
so sick. She had both lungs full of fluid and was drowning. In
addition to that, there is a bullet in her chest about an inch from
her heart and it is resting on a rib. I absolutely couldn't believe
it. At some point in her life some asshole shot her. What a bastard,
she's such a sweetheart. Also, she had giarrdia which was causing
horrible diarrhea. The vet couldn't believe that she was alive. She
said, "that is one tough old gal!" and she is.
;    The vet said that her heart (the right side where heartworms
normally
are) actually looked pretty good considering that she was HW+ (which
is a good sign). Her heart really wasn't enlarged much. She has
permanent damage to her lungs & will always have coughing problems,
but it is something that she could live with. Also, some of her
lipoma's may not be lipoma's and could possibly be other bad things,
but we'll deal with that later.
They put her on 10 different medicines and sent us home. ; I didn't
think she would make it through the day Saturday. She was pitiful and
struggling to breathe & I thought that it was too late to have
started the medicine and I should have picked up on this earlier (but
she really didn't show signs of being that sick 'til Friday and I
thought it was from the heartworm treatment before that). She had a
breakthrough Saturday afternoon and started doing a little better.
Last night was the first time she's gotten off the bed on her own to
come visit me in the house.
I take her to work with me everyday (she stays/rides in my truck
which she loves -- and she gets McD's ice cream every once in a
while!). She is starting to look a lot better and I hope & pray
she'll survive this. The vet said she's a truly amazing dog and has
been through a lot in her lifetime & most of it probably was not
good. She's definitely happy now though and if she dies tomorrow, I
know in my heart that she thinks she's spent the last 3 months in
heaven. She just doesn't know what she's in for when she finally ends
up in the real heaven!!! My roommate keeps telling me, "Julianne,
that dog looks like and acts like she is in heaven. She loves you!"
It's funny because he's right. My other dogs are a little bit
jealous, but I think they know that she is sick so they leave her
alone (except for my super smart, but can be such a punk sometimes
shepherd Cody who peed in her food bowl!). I guess he was trying to
show her what he thought of her. He is such a smart dog, he really
should be a police dog, but he can be a little punk when he wants to
be. He's my watch dog! Anyway, I just wanted to update you all on
Shadow's progress. Thanks for your prayers and keep them coming!

Julianne
