gif files are converted to html files

when i download a site with all default then the actual gif
pictures have the html extension instead of gif, when i rena
i can see the picture, but then i also should edit all the
html files wich call the gif pictures.
what is happening?
I have WinHTTrack Website Copier 3.40-2 (+swf)
