We can never trust our own assessment when we use terms like "mild" or
"moderate" ... there are too many factors that influence our ability to
understand speech. Just like your voice never sounds like you (to you), we
usually aren't able to actually assess our own hearing very well. The loss
is so gradual, usually, that we only notice when forced to. And, the other
main reason is we really dont WANT to have a hearing loss, so we (above all
others) are more likely to underestimate the loss.

They say the average person waits about 7 years before getting a hearing aid
that could have helped them that much sooner.

Hi jennifer,

I have a mild/ barely mod hearing loss and am planning on trying HAs.
I often wonder if I should bother, but usually as soon as I "decide"
not to go ahead I get into a situation where I miss something! I also
have gone back to work, and I'll need to hear as much as possible
there, so I'm gonna give them a go. I am trying to be positive, but
not to expect too much. My plan is to try Oticon Tego Pros, with an
open fitting (on the advice of my audie), and I'll just take it from
there.

Good Luck!

wendy
