Today was my first day back at school and it was filled with so many
exciting sounds! I had several CI moments including being able to hear the
";stop requested" ding on the bus as well as my professor without my FM
system. The latter literally brought me to tears since it has been over 10
years since I have been able to hear and understand someone from a distance.
(Picture me crying in class and trying not to make a spectacle of myself. It
wasn't easy! LOL!) I was also able to carry on a conversation with my
captionist who called my name and stopped me in a very loud and crowded
student union. Although I needed one or two repeats during our conversation,
I was thrilled that I was able to talk to her at all considering how much
background noise there was. Back to the class lecture -- The only difficulty
I had was concentrating on what was being said not only because of my
excitement at being able to hear and understand, but also because of the
different ways people speak. Although I'm able to understand speech quite
well with my CI, I still need to become used to people who speak a little
faster as I'm sure people with normal hearing do. I know all of that will
come in time though. To my surprise, I found that it wasn't as difficult to
listen and digest information in a 3 hour lecture as I thought it would be.
My next class is on Thursday -- also a 3 hour lecture. I'll be sure to
report any new CI moments, but as far as today goes...I couldn't have asked
for a better first day back to school!! <smile&gt;
