Wouldn't like to install it on any machine that's in use so I used the normal method and bought a new cheap laptop with it on

Not had time to play too much yet, but the built in full restore from the hard disk looks handy for testing installs (20 mins and it's back to factory condition).

Me?  I am avoiding Vista until AT LEAST Service Pack 1, Maybe 2.
One article in  a computer magazine extorts folks to upgrade to Vista now, since they will be doing so eventually, and so get the benefits of this new OS earlier.

A recent article in Forbes absolutely took Vista apart (along with Office 2007, although to a lesser extent).  Problems (IIRC):
1) Whole new way of organizing menus, with no "classic" option, 2) small number of nontrivial incompatibilities with old files, libraries, 3) loss of support for some older, but still in play device drivers, 5) Others that I don't recall.

And btw, just to rant a bit... while Microsoft promised to support vb6 applications on Vista they didn't ship all the dll's that your programs might need, so it's a big headache. Anyone using Vista yet or deploying applications to Vista?

I’m going down the same path, Mike.

Last night I downloaded the CTP of Orcas. Looks like fun!

Hi Mike,

In the USA, the stores, distributors, et al,
seem to be pushing the computer models
that are 'Vista Capable'.

Read that as: 'the bare-bones-model'.

I don't think that they mention during the
sales process that if you really want the
entire Vista Package, or 'experience',
that you need to spend some serious extra
money for one to 2 Gig of RAM, and
a really nice Graphics/Video/Thingie card.

Bigger hard drive would be nice, at today's
prices we can get a lot, but the really
important bit, after the RAM, is the
Processor, which should be new and shiny
and quick and ultra fast.

Think 'Cray' of just a few years ago < g >

I think there are going to be a few, or more,
who are very disappointed with their new
'Vista Experience'.

With a new machine, built with the necessary
upgrades, beyond and past the bare bones models,
Vista probably has much to offer, but like Bruce
I will probably sit on my hands until we get
up to Service Pack 'X'

Just a thought,
Steve

I come to praise GoBack -- not to bury it.

For those who do not know, Norton GoBack is a utility, much
like Windows' set point / restore functions, but MUCH easier
to use and better set up. It automatically creates restore
points at very frequent intervals (about every hour) that
the computer is on -- doesn't need a lot of disk space to do
it ( about 5% of your main partition hard drive), and can be
/ is invoked PRIOR to windows booting up (about the same
time as your diagnostics / setup page.

This site has saved my bacon twice so far... and if I had
used it more often when I saw anomalies, I might have a
healthier setup right now. Yes, one can always reimage, but
I am rather terrified of doing that, un less absolutely
necessary.

Some stories:

1) Had a Trojan that I could not remove given my software
tools and skill level (about 6 months ago) -- Not able to
really use Hijackthis (a wonderful tool for the cognoscenti,
but a hopeless endeavor for the initiate. However, I knew I
got the virus within the prior 2 days. GoBack. Yay.

2) MS... Umm.. their new policy of drive-by OS checks that
can cripple your OS by checking to see if you have a legit
copy of Win XP is a rather 2-edged sword. I promise
everyone I have a legit copy (bought my machine from Dell,
so my Win XP Pro is legit OEM)... but, while trying to fix
my macromedia flash problem, I reinstalled IE 6.... and,
along the way, on the he MS site, some drive by diagnostic
decided that my legit copy of XP may have been pirated, and
decided to cripple my computer. It wouldn't boot past the
initial Windows screen. How frustrating is that? Thank
you, GoBack.

3) For some weeks I cannot use Macromedia flash. Multiple
attempts to remove and reinstall it have been fruitless. My
wife decided to edit the registry (making a backup). All she
did was edit some permissions... no biggie right? Well, the
machine would not shut down properly, or reboot. No idea
why not. I could have tried booting off a restore disk,
but... Thank you GoBack.

Lesson: Don't install windows without it.
