Jrtinz,

Being an “old schoolR21; programmer like you, I struggled (and still do) with the whole “object oriented” programming concept.

What version of Host Explorer are you using?  Included in the version that I use (9.0.0.4) is a file called “HostExplorerProgramming.pdf” which is buried deep in some sub-folders.  Try doing a search of your computer for it.  It’s got some good information in it and possibly the information you’ll need on how to set the host address and connect the session.

Subject: Resource for Hummingbird Basic programming?

All:

I used to program quite a lot in basic, but now that I’m getting back into it – particularly because of using Hummingbird - I find that there is a LOT I don’t know.

For instance, I’m not sure of what is meant by “object” and what “dim HostExplorer as objectR21; accomplishes. ; Then go on to “dim MyHost as objectR21; and “;Set MyHost = HostExplorer.HostFromProfile(220;TX_UNIX4”)” to use a session.  Thereafter “MyHost.Keys221; to send commands.

I know to use them, but I don’t know WHY.  I’ve been thinking of programs in Microsoft Office as well, and I’m sure I’ll run into the same struggles.  Basic has came a long way since I used to write programs, and though I can do very well with the logic and algorithms, I am not grasping the overall concept of the language.

Does anyone know of a good resource on the WWW that addresses these sorts of questions?  I’m stuck trying to write code that will modify the connection address in a profile based on a user menu I’ve written, but I haven̵7;t a clue how that particular variable is addressed.  Nor how to tell HostExplorer to then connect once the address is assigned.  I’ve actually have a copy of Visual Basic.NET and have done some reading of the documentation, but it just doesn’t seem to tell me what I need to know when I try to program Hummingbird.

Any direction is appreciated and thanks in advance!
