how to connect to slapd

I read this on hula-project

If Hula is configured to store settings in a directory, you
can use any directory frontend to administer the server.

I've tried to connect using a ldap browser but I always get
invalid credentials ?

I'm using a basedc dc=example,dc=com
user, cn=admin
password, hula

I've tried user, cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com
as well ..

what is port 8983 used for?
