Initial connectivity

I'm just trying to establish basic connectivity between a Windows 2003 and a Linux Fedora box.  I know the Linux will accept ssh and will forward Xwindows because I've tested with other systems.  However, using Extend I can't seem to get past Xstart messages that say "Failed to Initialize Secure Shell Manager" and "Unable to connect to the host using specified start method".  Where is the "Secure Shell Manager" message coming from?
