Hello

It seems YAM recently lost its very useful auto copy feature for text in
read only windows. Unfortunately Jens seems unwilling to put it back even
as an option.

He has taken it upon himself to speak also for the IB team and says that :
> e.g. Multiview will have the autoclipping

be
> removed as well.

Damn, to copy that text I had to not just highlight it in the new version of
YAM but press RA-C too - what a nuisance !

Is this true. Do you intend to remove the VERY USEFUL option to copy text
just by highlighting it without the hassle of finding a paste menu or
hitting R-Amiga-C. I do hope not.

Do other IB (and YAM) users find the autoclipping "extremely useful" or
";unintuitive". It would be interesting to know. Maybe users of YAm, IB and
other major Amiga software should have a poll about this feature.

I personally think is a great feature and one that put the Amiga ahead of
other platforms where you have to go through more steps to do the same
thing. It was albeit a small advantage but one that we certainly cannot
afford to lose these days. Why drag ourselves down to doing things the
Windows and Linux ways ?

Please keep the auto clip feature (it IS optional anyway) in future versions
of IB.

Regards,

Bill.

It is absolutely essential.

I am still using YAM 2.4p1 and if this feature has been removed, I will
not be upgrading.

"autocopy"; is something which usually no appliction offers. you always
should press amiga+c to copy something.
even IF this should be possible it has to be sort of a setting for the
underlying editor class in my opinion.

so in general, pressing amiga+c is the way to go.

Um, first I've heard about . What context was the above text from Jens
taken from?

I'm just wondering what the reason behind removing this feature is. Until
I know more, it's hard to say what fate the feature has in IBrowse, but
we certainly won't be removing it without good reason. And as you say, it
can be switched off in the prefs anyway. Maybe it has something to do with
OS4, and if so, I don't think is any valid reason to remove that feature
when running IBrowse OS3 / MOS.

Currently the only version used on my machie is te old "Nist 20.16"; package, which allow autoclip(amiga-c) for all mui applications, but recent latests Yam refuse to use this package. Uunforunally i have to use SipleMail mailer :(

coming with todays update of yam nightly the feature is back in place!
you can activate it in the advanced prefs section if you really need it.

Uhum! The feature you're so drooling over is copied from Unix. And if
you were to drag yourself *UP* to Linux, you'd be browsing all those
websites that don't work in IBrowse, or AWeb, or Voyager (if you still
have it) that exclude your browser or use CSS, Java, Flash, and a lot of
JavaScript. Take foot out of mouth, Bill...

And, as I've said on the YAM list, what you give with one hand, you take
away with another. You lose the ability to replace highlighted text
when anything you highlight is copied into the copy buffer.

Copy and paste Amiga standard:
1. Highlight text, and copy it (if you want to).
2. Place cursor where the paste will go (either between text, or
over the top of something to be replaced).
3. Paste text.

Copy and paste Unix standard:
1. Highlight text, and it's copied.
2. Click mouse where it's to be pasted, and this can *ONLY* be
between other text.

Replacement of text, Amiga style:
1. Highlight your new text, copy it.
2. Click where you want it to be pasted, or highlight where you
want it to be pasted over.
3. Repeat just one step (step 2) for every place you want to do
this.

Replacement of text, Unix style:
1. Highlight text to be replaced, delete it.
2. Highlight text to be copied.
3. Click where text is to be pasted, and hope you don't
accidentally move a pixel or two while clicking, or your click
turns into a drag, and you're now copying blank spaces into the
copy buffer rather than pasting the text you wanted to paste.
4. Repeat all of the above three steps for each other place you
want to replace text.

Alternatively:
1. Highlight text to be copied.
2. Click next to insertion point.
3. Hit delete repeatedly or hold it down (this is slower than mouse
dragging).
4. Click to paste, and hope that you don't accidentally move the
mouse a fraction and turn the click into a drag, losing your
copy buffer.
5. Repeat from step 2 for the next one.

The *ix way is much slower, I've just spent several hours on the weekend
going through this pallaver updating a whole pile of things.
