inline crop/resize via extended filename

Here,

is mentioned the inline cropping of a file named
"image":

convert -size 6000x4000 -depth 8
'rgb:image[600x400+1900+2900]' image.jpg

It would be nice if this convention could be extended to
other inline 
commands. As a simple example,

convert image.png[600x400+1900+2900] smallimage.png

The above command actually succeeds (i.e., no error message)
but the file 
produced is the same as the source image.
