OSX: Crashing on convert, can't allocate region

I am having an error when i am trying to convert a thousand
frame miff to
sgi or png file.  The command i am using is

convert -limit memory 8000 -limit file 5000 file.mif
file.%05d.sgi

This is on a PPC OS-X system with the 6.3.0-1 build and with
16G of ram.

Is therre any magick i can do to get this to work?  The raw
file is 1.1G
and there are just under 1000 frames in it, all 950x470ish
