background color never showed

I'm very new to IM. What I want is actually very simple, I
want to 
dispaly small image centered with solid color as a 
background for xdm 
login screen.

In /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0 I have:

/usr/bin/display -window root -backdrop -background
"#f0f0f0" 
/path/to/image.png

It can display the image correctly but the background is
always black.
Really appreciate any help, i spen my whole weekend solving
this problem
