Looking over some more info I found this:

convert  rose: -separate separate_%d.gif

which is supposed to separate an imput image into three
separate 
images containing the red, green, and blue components
without 
converting them to grayscale and giving their filenames 
sequentially numbered names: separate_1.gif separate_2.gif
and 
separate_3.gif
