Reducing the number of bytes...

I'm trying to reduce the number of bytes in an image. I can
easily
convert the bmp to jpg and the size to something reasonable,
but the
number of bytes is still large, around 300kb for a simple
image! Am I
missing something? Possibly a whole chunk of knowledge about
how
images work?

Cheers,

Cliff

Yeah, probably that's it

But if you are saving to JPEG, try the "-quality"
option that will
save you lots of bytes at the expense of some visual
quality. Also,
strip any unwanted meta-data from file such as thumbnails,
EXIF,
comments, etc. The "-strip" option will remove it
all.

BMP doesn't hold any metadata so JPG converted from them
cannot contain
metadata. Conversion any format -> bmp -> any format
is recommended here
way of complete removal of metadata when -strip isn't enough
(and in
many cases it is not).
