ImageMagick 6.2.5 cannot ping or read image on Win XP?!

I have been using IM with great success, calling it from
Common Lisp on
Windows XP. This was with version 6.0.0 binaries.

I just installed IM 6.2.5 and get failure on MagickReadImage
or even
just MagickPingImage. And I just modified a C app to try the
same thing
since I am always concerned about calling C from Lisp. I get
the same
errors in C (and I first used fopen/fclose on the file to
make sure it
was where I thought it was.

I am doing this indirect investigation because I have some
concern over
whether I will be able to build IM binaries from source to
debug. I do
not see the VisualMagick stuff referred to in the doc. Is
that obsolete?

I will take a stab at cobbling together a VC++ DSW.
Meanwhile, any hints
are welcome, especially:

Is anyone out there using IM 6.2.5 successfully under
Windows XP?

thx, kenny

No trouble here so far, but I haven't done much with it.

I think this is a common upgrade problem. I have seen it
before, but
never been able to figure out what causes it. Sorry. I would
recommend
compiling it yourself and attempting to debug if it doesn't
work.
