Hi Virginia & Other Warriors,

I have no problem with the IDEA of applying for social
security, or for any other disability benefits. It's the
PROCESS that dismays me. I just got off the phone to a
CalPERS representative (CalPERS insures California Public
Employees), only to learn that my disability retirement
application was thrown out because my university hadn't
submitted the paperwork it was supposed to submit. I'd
submitted my copies of this paperwork--which my university
had 3 months to mail to CalPERS--but that didn't matter.
Now I have to start from scratch in a process the CalPERS
phone representative said could take several years, not the
3 months they claim it will take in their literature.
Meanwhile I'm getting conflicting information about whether
CalPERS is or is not taking health insurance out of my
service retirement, so that's another battle.

I imagine most of us have gone through this, but it gets me
absolutely furious to have to begin from the beginning
because of my university's mistake or negligence. And since
I live in California, I imagine applying for temporary
social security benefits will involve its own labyrinths
& obstacles, the whole unnecessary mess requiring more
time & energy than I can muster.

Hi, Libby -

Zeroth, I'm not clear on why CALPERS is involved. Is the
university in
the CSU system? I was in the UC system with self-paid
disability and my
first check arrived directly from the insurance company two
weeks after
my sick leave/vacation time ended.

Next, the SS benefits are not temporary. Getting mine done
after my six
months was up took less than an hour and my first check
arrived less
than three weeks later. I did go in person and dealt with
only one
person (delivered my medical chart information to her
directly) so there
was NO he has/she has/nobody has issue with getting the
paperwork and
the chart connected.

HTH.
