Hi Ladies,
It's me again, Rosy. We've moved mom and dad to my home.
It was getting harder for dad to take care of her alone
since she is on such strong painkillers and is so confused
and disoriented at times because of them. Dad now seems
okay and less stressed, but I know that they get homesick at
times. It's only been a month now. She keeps saying that
she's going to go home once she gets better and I keep
saying "okay".

Anyway, mom's getting radiation so I take her every
morning and then go to work after dropping her home with
dad. I go to work and come home to make dinner which would
be enough for both mom and dad for lunch the next day. It
is really tough cause I have to wake up at 5:30am for mom's
first doze of oxy in the morning. She won't eat it without
eating somethign so I have to make breakfast for her at
5:30am. It is good that she eats even though at times I can
see that she is forceing herself so she won't get sicker.
She is so strong. I don't get home till 7pm and am working
on the weekends so that I can make up my hours. My hubby is
so sweet he takes over on the weekends and helps me with all
the dressing changes. Mysister comes in on the weekends to
help but it is hard for her since she lives 5hrs away and
has two small kids.
Anyway, what I wanted to ask is that I am trying to see if
I can get some help at home. Hospice doesn't provide any
help other than the nurse who comes in twice a week to check
on mom and to make sure we have enough meds. That is great
and is a big help, but I NEED to go to work. I don't know
what to do. I called some places that provide companion
care at home, but they charge $20/hr. That's a lot of
money!!!! Mom has medicare. We will be applying for
medicaid soon since I think they help with home care more
than medicare does.
Anyone have any suggestions. I've already called the
county and they were not able to help either. The social
worker told us that they can help us but only if we have
medicaid.
I saw some emails going around about Social Security. Can
they help in some way?? How do you claim for disability??
What do I do? I only neeed someone from 9am to 3pm so I
can go to work. I can't afford $20./hr. What do I do??
Please help.
  Rosy

Rosy,

I thought something was wrong with that "Nurse twice a
week" thing. If your Mom is on Medicare, and has been
certified for hospice care, check out this site http://w
ww.hospicenet.org/html/medicare.html

>From my experience working at a hospice the usual
Medicare coverage is a flat fee per day and it covers the
Meds. Nurse (As needed) and an aid for 10 hours a week, (
Most providers break that down to two hours a day.) and
equipment. ( Hospital bed Etc.) Now if she is on radiation
that is anything other then palliative, then she might not
qualify for hospice.

Get back to me if I can help.
