passing |

This last year has been a very stressful one with all the
chemo, radiation,
mastectomy and lymph node dissection, radiation, and total
hysterectomy.
I'm so happy that it is all over, and I feel very blessed
that I'm alive and
able to watch my children grow up. I know that it still
will be a battle,
but I feel I have done everything possible to get rid of
the cancer and
will continue to see my doctors as told and take Arimedex
daily. Tomorrow I
will go back to work as a school teacher since March
2006(when my sick leave
began). I am excited and somewhat nervous because I will
have k-2 and they
really need help and attention. I will also be taking 2
online classes for
the next 8 weeks so I can finish my Masters. Yes, I will be
busy with that
and my own family, but I am looking forward to going back to
somewhat type
of normalcy.
On a sad note, my husband's father just passed away this
morning at 1:30 due
to colerectol cancer. He had been at home since Oct. 2005
in a hospital bed
and he lasted longer that expected. The last few days he
was going downhill
and was unable to eat. My husband left yesterday morning
and just got to
Indiana a little bit ago. At first, he was upset because he
didn't make it
in time, but he now realizes that it wouldn't have been good
seeing him that
way. We were able to see him in Oct. 2005 when he first was
put in a
hospital bed at home, then right after that I found out that
I had cancer.
I just know that he is in a better place because he was
suffering so much.
I appreciate all your prayers and kind words as we continue
to grieve during
this time.
Brenda

Dear Brenda
I am very touched by your letter as it just came to me as I
am at my
computer reviewing all the circumstances of my own return to
work
after cancer treatment because of my own current situation
with which
I won't trouble you.
I know that as a teacher you will not wish to disappoint
your class
tomorrow but I urge you to consider that, even if you are
not
personally able to attend your father in laws funeral, that
you will
be involved in your own and your husbands grieving process
in the
months to come.
A return to work after the ordeal of the cancer battle you
describe
needs to be gradual. I know that you want to resume normal
life and
be done with all your previous health problems but you
should be sure
that your back to work plan acknowledges that you need to
gradually
build up to your former abilities.
Please take good care of yourself and my thoughts are with
you.

Please accept my sincerest sympathy about your
father-in-laws passing.
Have a wonderful time with your class. I taught through the
second
half of my treatment the Taxol, radiation part, and it
really helped
me keep my mind off my medical situation. I washed my hands
frequently, learned to make the kids come to me with their
questions
so I coud sit down and save energy, and made myself ask my
colleagues
for help when I was lowest on energy (not an easy thing for
me).
You'll probably have more energy than I did since you've
finished
treatment, but it always takes me a couple of weeks to get
back in the
routine every fall, even when I'm perfectly well so take it
easy and
get as much rest as you can in the evenings when you get
home.
