Hi to Experts

my interest is to know that, when we should go for ETL
tools if there is a choice between database loaders
and ETL tools?

since there are many loader utilities available in
Teradata for specific purposes and also in other
databases.

Exactly under which circumstances, we should go for
Loaders rather than ETL Tools or vice varsa.

i know this is a tough question because it needs
experience in both Tools and loaders so all sort of
Your inputs on this are highly appreciated.

Thanks
Dixon

Dixon,
A question first. Are you looking for a LOADER tool or an ETL tool? I think that's where you need to start your research. I will just throw in my two cents so that people can agree or disagree with me.

I think this comes down to the kind of expertise you have in-house. Many loader tools provide the ability to interface with multiple databases one way or the other. With informatica it becomes fairly simple to interface with different type of sources. But then again, if your company has people who know how to use these loader tools with time and cost constraints then you should do that. If you have people who know informatica then you should go with informatica.
Normally, if you are a shop that uses many different DBMS then what you need is a standard ETL engine to move data around. With Informatica, you can define standards around interfacing and data movement.
Now if you are an "all-oracle"; or "all-sql server" or "all-teradata" kind of shop then I would just suggest you use whatever is provided by the tool. Almost all tools work well with other tools that are compiled with it (so to speak).

A few questions to ask here are,
What are we going to be using these technologies for?
Can my loader provide simple interfacing with multiple type of sources and targets?
Is the loader tool or Informatica a one stop solution for me?

It would be wrong for anyone to pick a tool and say "that's the best tool for you". If it was that easy, many if the consulting firm would close down tomorrow.

hope I confused you a little more!!!

regards,
Kirtan
