Well, for a designer the trick is not in knowing that
layering is 101, but
knowing when/how to apply it in a *given context,* which is
sort of the
antithesis of best practice.

Heh, I understand where you're going with this, but you
know, every
basic 101 of anything is always the first step in knowing
when not to
follow that basic 101 knowledge. Also, knowing about best
practice is
essential to knowing when not to follow it, as well.
