By the way, do we have any attorneys in the house, who'd like to
comment (for legal education purposes only, not constituting legal
counsel, et cetera) on the personal and organizational liability
issues involved in walking around with a nonprofit's backup tapes in
your bag or stowing them in your sock drawer at home? Just curious.

The trade-offs between tape and online services are really changing with the introduction of Amazon's S3 service and the infrastructure that will build up around it (e.g., Jungle Disk). Things are becoming cheap enough that it is attractive to consider online storage as an easy way to provide offsite backup and redundancy, complementing local tape backups.

Corrected link to recommendations on nonprofit backups
