Deborah's scenarios *are* mostly improbably, but there's one big one that isn't: a natural disaster, like Hurricane Katrina.
It's easy to imagine a small nonprofit or a small business in New Orleans that had their office destroyed, as well as the house of the person storing their backup tapes. Actually, I'd be interested in hearing about documented cases of permanent data loss from this incident, as a tool for learning.
There are many caveats: some regions aren't as susceptible to these disasters, some people say "if something like that happened we'd have bigger things to worry about", many nonprofits have much more basic backup issues to address, and so on. But the lesson I take away is that disasters, of many shapes and sizes, DO happen.
