Hey all,
I help run the computer systems for a small daycare center
near the Arizona-Mexico border. I'm not a pro or anything
(just do this on a volunteer basis), but I like to think I'm
decently network-savvy.
Well, a few days ago I got my new laptop, an HP v4000 with
all the bells and whistles. Since I'm upgrading from an old
Toshiba Satellite 1905-S303, I've been trying to transfer my
files from the older computer to the newer one. The new one
runs XP Pro, and the old one runs XP Home.
However, it's been pulling some really strange stuff on me.
I know it's the fault of the HP, because the Toshiba can
network with other computers. First I tried all the standard
renewing IP, restarting the computer, setting a static IP,
running the Network Setup Wizard, etc. Whatever I did, the
HP laptop refused to access my workgroup. Occasionally the
Toshiba could see the HP in My Network Places, but it
couldn't access it.
Then stuff started to get weird. The HP laptop lost the
ability to ping its own IP address (it would say that the
ping attempt timed out). As if that weren't bad enough, now
the ipconfig command does not work on the HP laptop! When I
enter it, the command prompt simply hangs. This is
completely outside of my networking experience. I've always
relied on the ipconfig command to let me know what's up with
my network adapter, but now it doesn't work.
Any advice, tips, or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Roberto Valenzuela
PS Except when I set a static IP, I can connect to the
Internet on all computers.
PPS My network is based off a Buffalo Airstation g54 router
hooked up to a Hughes DirecWay satellite internet system.
These problems persist regardless of whether I use the
wireless or physical connections.
