(ISF) Microsoft Portal system question - online client service

Hi all,

Fairly new to the list, hoping for some opinions/input.

I'd like to ask folks on the list about portal/CMS
products/applications that would be worth investigating and
assessing for an e-services project at WoodGreen Community
Services, where I work in Toronto. We are working towards
an RFP process in the near future.

Some information about our project:

WoodGreen Community Services wishes to develop a
collaborative community services portal with content
management system (CMS) and interactive service components.
Our focus is on developing a website that provides our
newcomer clients with a space to work with us and together
to share organized content and online engagement tools; in
essence, a member-based service website. We will provide
e-services based on our service units, starting with new
immigrants and employment. Clients who will be accessing
our face-to-face services will find complementary online
services, including interactive resources, discussion groups
and referrals to useful websites. This will include a
public website for potential clients to find out more about
our programs and services.

We're basically looking to develop a portal site that has
strong personalization features and is built on a Microsoft
server infrastructure. WoodGreen plans to roll the service
out to other units within the organization (hence the portal
vision) and to use the backend as an organization intranet.

We're very much looking for a system that has strong, but
easy to use content creation and management/workflow
features (including multilingual ? we serve a large Chinese
population), with strong user engagement/personalization and
communication modules. Yes, in essence, we want it to do
everything you can think of with a client online (I can
provide a more detailed summary of requirements if that
would help)!

We've got a strong in-house IT department and they want to
host and maintain the service/site in-house, on our own
server infrastructure. Here's a quick overview of our set
up:

Our in-house server environment:

Application Server	IIS
Database	SQL 2000 but planning for 2005
License
Operating System	Windows 2003
Programming Language	ASP.NET 1.1 & ASP.NET 2.0
Root Access	Yes
Shell Access	Yes
Web Server	IIS 6.0
Back up VERITAS Backup solution
Security NetScreen and McAfee e-Policy
Connection	7 MB DSL

Internally, we have multiple client tracking databases being
used, with an eye to centralize use of an in-house built
(MSSQL) client tracking management system and integrate it
with the portal.

I've been exploring products like MS Sharepoint Portal,
dotnetnuke and a variety of other Portal systems and am
getting close the RFP stage. However, I'm hoping to do some
more focused exploring and hopefully get some vendor-neutral
evaluation of potential applications we can make use of.
So, I was hoping that folks on the list might have portal
systems you might recommend or are using, that work well on
a Microsoft Network Platform.

Thanks very much,

Marco
