>>I am looking for a dataset that I can use to demonstrate a web
data-querying tool. It needs to be public (obviously), and also
something that is in the public consciousness. For example, I could
use a dataset of the world's inactive volcanoes, but I don't think
many people know or care about inactive volcanoes. Ideal would be a
table of tv shows, movies, livable cities, consumer items, etc. It
needs to have from 500 to 100,000 records, at least a half dozen
fields, and it should be free or under a hundred dollars. I tried the
US census, but there are only 50 states, and that is a pretty small
data set. I know some sports info is available, but I am leaning away
from that because that is only interesting to certain types of folks.
All suggestions welcome!>>
Dear Eric, and other esteemed colleagues:
First, a disclaimer - this is a very Massachusetts-centric response.
And now for an idea: go to the Metropolitan Area Planning Council
<www.mapc.org>, which is putting together a huge data repository that
is of compelling interest to regional planners and just about anyone
who is concerned about the future of the greater Boston area. I'm
guessing that they already have a number of data sets that available
on request to anyone who wants to download them. The person to
contact would be Holly St. Clair < hstclair%40mapc.org">hstclair
mapc.org>.
Another Massachusetts-centric response: talk to the folks at
Northeastern's Center for Urban and Regional Planning about the Boston
Renaissance Resource Kit
<http://www.curp.neu.edu/projects/completed.htm#boston>. They are
very big on "democratizing the data," and would probably be happy to
give you a dataset. The person to contact would be Barry Bluestone
< b.bluestone%40neu.edu">b.bluestone
neu.edu>.
I hope that this helps!
