Right now, my life is completely in flux, so NonProfit Launch Party in Second Life onJanuary 19th seems like an eternity away. Depending on what happens over the next couple of weeks, I would be very interested. I am copying Sandra on this.
However, I am also responding to the ISF list for a few other reasons. I've been exploring Second Life a bit recently for political purposes, and what I'm finding there may also be useful for non-profits as well.
One thing I found was BlogHud. http://www.bloghud.com BlogHud is a blogging system for Second Life. You can send a message from Second Life and it will show up on BlogHUDs page. They have nice feature to find who blogged what, and from where they blogged it.
For example, check out http://my.bloghud.com/aldonhuffhines/ for my recent posts from SecondLife and http://visit.bloghud.com/Commonwealth_Island/ for posts from Commonwealth Island. We should get people to post from SecondLife when there are non-profit events there.
From there, I stumbled across Snapzilla. Snapzilla, aka SLPics or http://www.sluniverse.com/pics is sort of like the Flickr of Second Life. It is even supposed to support cross posting to Flickr, but that hasn't worked for me yet. Bloghud includes pictures from Snapzilla, and you can associate them with your profile there.
As I was learning my way around Snapzilla, I also came across SLProfiles. If Snapzilla is the Flickr of Second Life, SLProfiles is the MySpace of SecondLife. I haven't really started putting up much of a profile there, but I would encourage you to set up an account and stop by my account: http://www.slprofiles.com/slprofiles.asp?id=5450 It also has a blogging tool, similar to bloghud.
While there isn't much of a community of non-profit activists on any of these sites that I've found so far, there is no reason why we couldn't build communities in these spaces as yet another way to draw people to our causes.
