Grid Technology is most likely overkill for most startups. Here is a quick synapses from wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grid_computing , but in a nutshell it is when you network many machines together for a common task. Sun has an opensource version located here http://www.gridengine.sunsource.net/
