This is a hard one to get around because you are often
limited to using the SMTP server of the ISP providing the
connection at any given time. Many ISPs block traffic on
port 25 (25 is the "email" port) unless it's to
their own SMTP server. Outside of reconfiguring the email
client every time one of the laptop users connects to a new
ISP there are only a few options I can think of, however, of
course, there may be more. One is to set them up to use
Webmail, the other is to have them connect to your network
using a VPN so they can use the same SMTP server everytime.
Another possibility that is available more and more by some
email providers due to the prolific blocking of port 25 is
email servers configured to receive SMTP traffic on a
different port. If your email provider offers that option
all you have to do is change the SMTP port on the email
clients from 25 to whatever the other port is. Check with
your email provider. Hope this helps.
Hope this helps.

>>We have a handful of remote users who are having
trouble sending email when they are not in the office with
their laptops. When they take the laptops off-site, they
will get error messages re: "relaying
denied-authentication required". I'm sure this is
because when these users are off-site they are no longer
connecting through our ISP who provides the SMTP for us. I
can manually configure outlook to authenticate to the SMTP
servers before sening email, but occasionally this doesn't
work, and sometimes the settings don't
"stick".>>
