I have also been thinking about this a lot lately. It's back to the future -- the dumb box connected to the smart now network. But I think the end might turn out to be some kind of hybrid. I just read about Firefox 3 being able to support offline applications. I am not exactly sure what that means, but I can imagine a time when data is stored on the network, the application is in some kind of a browser, but certain processes happen locally and there is a smart interaction between the two.

>> While it is still mostly vaporware, there is a move to re-attach us to the mainframe by way of the internet and web based applications. While the web is a good platform for web pages and information I have to wonder is it is a great advantage for most programs and processes. From the application providers POV it is a win, they get to collect monthly dues from every user vs selling them a piece of software and using it as long as it is useful for the price.>>
