Hi, I am looking for an easy to use, inexpensive alternative to Photoshop in order to create graphics and edit photos. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you!

The most popular Linux graphics editor, widely considered the "Photoshop of the Linux World"; is known as GIMP, and is also available in a Windows build. That's probably the most feature-packed editor you are going to find, and for free.

There are others, such as Paint Shop Pro that have good features, and cost a moderate amount, but lack some of the more advanced features of layering, etc.

(ISF) Blog/library software

I'm looking for software that will allow me to set up a new blog, accompanied by a library of documents. The blog is primarily for international environmental activists, and will be like most other blogs in terms of being a mixture of news and opinion. While it will be open for anyone to read, only those with a password or other security will be allowed to post there. We also want to include a library of important documents on the same site, a library that will grow substantially over time, and needs to be indexable and searchable. Other than occasionally reading some blogs, I have no experience with this. Any recommendations for software are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Check out Gimp; it's open source, runs on pretty much
anything, and has worked rock solid for me so far. I don't
like its menu organization sometime, but it'll definitely
get the job done.

Hi Richard,

The free program 'Paint.net' is regarded by many (self included) as one of the best alternatives to PhotoShop - from the download site:

"Paint.NET is free image editing and photo manipulation software designed to be used on computers that run Windows. It supports layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. It started development as an undergraduate college senior design project mentored by Microsoft, and is currently being maintained by some of the alumni that originally worked on it. Originally intended as a free replacement for the MS Paint software that comes with Windows, it has grown into a powerful yet simple tool for photo and image editing."

Richard-

(A wave from across town!)

Many have already recommend the GIMP -- it is indeed the leading open-source "photoshop killer" and is probably the right choice if you want the most powerful program possible.

If all you need to do is very simple photo resizing, cropping and touch-up, say for web publication, I would also recommend trying out XnView (http://www.xnview.org) -- it does a lot less than the GIMP, and I think it may be a bit easier to use. It's not good for creating original graphics, though, just for lightweight image/photo editing.

best,

jon

Drupal. Simply no competition, in my opinion. Well over 1000
modules of user-developed functionality have been added to
the project, and more are being added every week...it's
growing fast, and is a very healthy/mature project. It's
also open source, which means it's developed for the
community by the community, and is free.

It's the most robust CMS package out there, and about as
easy to implement as Wordpress. The functionality you're
looking for would work "out of the box", and you'd
be able to add functionality as required for future
upgrades.

There is also a rapidly growing development community
(including a couple of people who post to this list) that
specializes in Drupal development work, so having someone
set up your site for you should be simple.

Hope this helps!

 Dave.

I think those of us successfully implementing Plone (http://plone.org) and Joomla (http://joomla.org) would beg to
differ. Both are
robust and easy-to-use open-source CMS platforms with
vibrant communities and strong track records in the NGO
sector.

All three of these products are considerably more complex
(and more powerful) than Wordpress (which is also excellent,
but very focused on blogging).
