>>I would like to get a job with Information Systems. What is the
best way to go about it?>>
Dear Sarah, and other esteemed colleagues:
If you're in search of job openings in the field of information
systems for the nonprofit sector, then of course I recommend that you
subscribe to the "Nonprofit Tech Jobs" email distribution list. Just
send a blank email to this address:
< nonprofit_tech_jobs-SUBSCRIBE%40yahoogroups.coms">nonprofit_tech_jobs-SUBSCRIBE
yahoogroups.coms>, and reply to the
request for confirmation. There's no charge.
If you are asking a broader strategic question about the best
preparation for your career or a plan of action in seeking the right
job, then I think I'd like to throw it open to entire group for
brainstorming.
The one piece of advice that immediately occurs to me is that an
information systems professional in the nonprofit sector ought to have
an interdisciplinary background. By that, I don't merely mean that
you should know about (for example) databases, network
administration, and web development! You should also be well versed
in the social missions of the nonprofit organizations that interest
you, in professional ethics/etiquette, in the best ways of training
colleagues with a wide range of cognitive styles, in organizational
behavior, and in all those soft skills that are difficult to pin down
but are usually described as "interpersonal" in job announcements.
Reviewing the previous paragraph, I heartily wish that I came up to
the standard I described.

Best regards from Deborah
