(Dear Colleagues: This is a recent post to the Association
of
Internet Researchers email distribution list <http://aoir.org>. This
sort of zeitgeist tracking can be useful if you're
interested in doing
search engine optimization for your nonprofit
organization's web site.
 Best regards from Deborah)

Hello all, maybe many of you know this google tool already,
but for
those who don't, I think it is pretty interesting. They
named it
Zeitgeist ("Etymology: German, from Zeit (time) +
Geist (spirit) |
Date: 1884 | Meaning: the general intellectual, moral, and
cultural
climate of an era"): http://www
.google.com/press/zeitgeist.html

Basically it gives you the most popular queries by
week/month,
highlighting searching trends. There is also the possibility
to search
specific trends between countries to note cultural
differences if any:
http
://www.google.com/press/intl-zeitgeist.html.

As I said, I find it very fascinating. Enjoy,

HGZ

I've seen 'zeltgeist' before, I never really thought
about using it that way.

One tip that I have: if you can, look through your own web
server logs. If possible, install some log analyzing tools.
Most of the tools offer a means to see what search term
someone used to get to your page. In addition, they will
tell you the referer page. The referer page could be
someones email, another web page, or a search engine result.
I've used webalizer. it allows you to customize quite a
bit of things. It will also show you the entry page and exit
pages.
