Deb, et al.
Well, today, I found, via Twitter, TwitterBox, which allows you post to Twitter from Second Life, so there are two emerging technologies to play with. ( http://ordinalmalaprop.com/twitter/ )
As to the ettiquettical problem, I generally leave all my posts wide open, so I don't worry too much about that. However, I have had people ask me to add them as friends. If I don't know them, I check to see who their friends are. As an example, I got a friends request from a person that is friends with Beth Kanter. That is a good enough recommendation for me. Beyond that, if they don't give enough information, then it probably isn't a big deal not to add them.
As always, MHO, YMMV.

>>I'm currently grappling with an etiquettical problem. For the time being, I'm restricting access to my Twitter messages to colleagues and friends. I've now received a Twitter invitation from someone who only gives a first name (no web site, no email address, no one-line biography). I have no idea who it is, and I can't even send this person a polite "who are you?" I can only accept or decline the invitation.Any suggestions?>>
