(ISF) Google Adsense on Nonprofit Web Sites

I am looking for feedback, good, bad or indifferent,  from
non-profits who have used Google Adsense ads on their site
as a means to generate income. A member of our Board of
Directors who has a commercial site has been successful
generating a modest income stream from adding Adsense.  He
has suggested we follow suit. While I am philosophically
opposed to the concept and have some concerns about some of
the practical aspects of managing the ads in terms of
ensuring we don't provide links to sites which are either
spam or selling products we would rate as unsuitable or
inappropriate, we also are always in dire need of funds, so
I have to be practical as well if it would be a potentially
viable concept.

I am researching the pros and cons of this subject and
looking for others who have either done this and their
results, good, bad or indifferent, or who have decided not
to do it and what their reasoning was.  Also, I am looking
for actual non-profit sites where there are Adsense ads
running; having difficulty simply finding such sites.

Hi -

You have to think about what you do and the key words on
your site and how they will trigger what ads get put on by
Google. I can remember once being blown away by a feminist
Asian American group and the ads on their site were for
Asian dating and overseas marriage services. One of the
aspects of the Violence Against Women Act (VIWA) that was
just signed was the high incidence of abuse faced by foreign
brides.

If what comes up won't hurt your image - its worth it. But
if the ads contradict what you stand for - steer clear. To
get an idea of what will be on your site - just do a Google
search using some of your sites key words. I just did 'Asian
American' and of the 8 ads, 5 were for 'beautiful Asian
singles', 'lovely Asian singles', etc. - which is why we
will not do Google ads.
