I would like to request recommendations or experience from
any users regarding training with New Horizons based in
Boston, Quincy and Waltham Mass. As an 'accidental techie'
from a non-profit in Pawtucket, RI, I sometimes find that
just a little more education/training in certain areas would
make my job a lot easier. I would also appreciate any other
suggestions for getting skills upgraded in specific topic
areas, i.e. email, project management, etc.

Thanks in advance!

I've taken several of New Horizon's workshops, MS Project,
Outlook, etc. They are a national franchise organization
with the training modules developed for all levels of
technical expertise. I have a strong training background
and was pleasantly surprised by how well organized and
delivered the classes were. The instructors were both
knowledgeable and patient with those in the class who came
to the class with less technical skills than others.

Of course, the courses I've taken were here in Bellevue,
Washington, but I know several of the managers and they've
told me that one of the benefits of a national organization
using their courses is the standardization of the programs -
you can expect them to be well done wherever you take the
course.

They will also customize a program by combining several
'modules' for you.

I'm a fan, so good luck with them!

Hi Fran,

Boston University offers an online course in Project
Management that is PMI certified. (www.pmi.org).

I cannot provide a direct referral but I am considering
taking it. A PMI certificate is widely recognized.

Hi Fran,

I'll let you in on a little secret. Organizations that
obtain Microsoft Office through TechSoup Stock automatically
receive free licenses for self-paced eLearning courses. Most
folks are unaware of this because the CD must be purchased
separately for $30, and it is not offered on TechSoup Stock.
Organizations with a high-speed Internet connection can also
apparently download the courses direct from Microsoft at no
additional cost.

List of courses included with Microsoft Office 2003 with
Software Assurance: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/MELL/bizusers/defau
lt.asp

See a demo of Microsoft eLearning for business users: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/MELL/demo/default.asp

Order the Microsoft eLearning Library CD kit from any Volume
License Reseller. The exact name of the item may vary from
vendor to vendor, but it should be something like
"Microsoft eLearning Library Desktop Edition - media
kit." http://www.microsoft.com/learning/books/howtobuy/volu
me.asp http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=557698

Download eLearning courses from Microsoft Volume License
Services (MVLS) https://licensing.microsoft.com/eLicense/L1033/Default
.asp

Different people learn in different ways, and computer-based
training is not for everyone. This is such an inexpensive
option, though, that I thought I would mention it for
everyone on the list.

Hope this helps,

Zac Mutrux
