I guess there are two questions - management and effectiveness. I can't say anything about management - but the data on effectiveness in some areas is getting clearer - for-profits are less effective. There are examples of for-profit corporations that do schools, hospitals, prisons and many other parallel services to either non- profit or governmental agencies. And, from what I've read over the years, although I think the jury is still out, it's not at all clear that for-profits do even as good a job as non-profits do.
