I'm the IT manager for a nonprofit office. I maintain a single server, about 20 workstations, and a few networked printers. We're still running Windows 2000 Server, it's getting to be time to reinstall, and I've run into a few needs that have convinced me to upgrade to Windows 2003 Server.

I've gone to the TechSoup website to make the purchase and found my head swimming in licensing. I'm wondering if anyone can break down W2K3 user/computer/terminal licensing into plain language for me.

Specifically, I'm wondering

-Do I need to buy both user and computer licenses? If not, how do I decide which to buy?

-I do some remote desktop work, so it looks like I also need to buy some terminal licenses. How do I decide how many terminal licenses to buy, and again, how do I decide between user and computer licenses?

Thanks much,

Sasha,

We're using SBS 2003 a LOT - especially for agencies with a workstation footprint of 5-50 or so -and I'm pretty sure that SBS 2003 includes remote pc over http, too - you might want to take a peek at that and see if that tool would meet your needs.

Hi Sasha,

I also want to endorse Small Business Server. Ease of
install, support, and management along with very nice out of
the box remote access options make it my first choice for a
single server environment like yours (it doesn't preclude
other servers by the way).

That will mean SBS 2003 which includes 5 user or device CALs
and then however many packs of 5 you'd need in addition (eg
20PCs would be 3 more 5 packs).

To be sure of how you should license, read; http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003
/sbs/howtobuy/licensing.mspx

The way SBS2k3 is bundled makes it very easy to get full
functionality of Remote Web Workspace, SharePoint, Outlook
Web Access, Exchange, SQL server up and running straight out
of the box. The connectcomputer wizard makes roll out
really blissful, and there are some extra benefits on backup
options and monitoring.
