I have no inside information from Adobe, but it?s been my understanding that Pagemaker was on the way out for several years now, there is no version for the modern Macintosh OS for instance.
I?ve been managing the transition to InDesign from PageMaker for at least 3 or 4 years, InDesign is a satisfactory replacement [reasonable alternative] if the TechSoup?s four donated licenses a year can provide for a ?small nonprofits? needs. InDesign is a powerful program perhaps more than a small nonprofits ?needs? but the alternative are sparse for a robust desktop publisher recognized by print services. The $690 asking price is quite a bite, but the various less expensive alternatives are probably pretty much dead ends with proprietary formats not recognized by print services. The on again off again Microsoft offering never seems to have been supported well. I use another one {Serif Page+} on my home, Windows computer, but it only serves to highlight to me its inadequacies, I have no information on what might be available thru open source however..
