Dear ISF Colleagues,
First of all, a disclaimer: this is totally frivolous, so if you're
not in the mood, please hit the "delete" key now.
I spent part of last week with my good buddies Allan Benamer and Jeff
Tuller; we're working on an exciting new nonprofit technology project
that's still under wraps, so I won't say much about it yet. However,
I can freely report that we spent a lot of time making jokes about
lolcats and variations on the theme.
"LOL" is a common internet abbreviation for "laughing out loud," and a
bunch of web sites have emerged to display funny photographs of cats,
presidents, walruses, and other inherently humorous animals. The
photos are accompanied by highly idiomatic captions.
Naturally, the grammar of those idiomatic captions is now being
subjected to linguistic analysis and is even morphing into a real
world computer language. It's a geek thing, you know?
Meanwhile, I find myself speculating about the next development: a
lol nptech web site. As you'llsee, I've taken the liberty of putting
together the first captioned photo:

However, I'll leave it to others to buy the lolnptech.org domain and
start developing the site.
Best regards from Deborah
