Just to weight in. I run a small not-for-profit using
QuickBooks. The best
thing about it in my opinion is their payroll service which
includes filing
all the related tax forms, and direct deposit of paychecks
to employees.
It's reporting functions are excellent and very easy to
use, keeping our
Board of Directors fully updated and most accountants are
familiar with it,
easing the annual audit. Intuit also has checks, windowed
envelopes, and
other supplies that compliment the accounting package.
My spouse directs a much larger not for profit using
Raiser's Edge.
Raiser's Edge is much, much more powerful with a very steep
learing curve
for staff. It is far more than an accounting program, ie its
accounting
functions are fully integrated with a database of all the
institution's
donors, students, teachers, vendors, clients, etc. allowing
the development
office, for example, to keep track of donors, send out
mailings to targeted,
parts of the institution's constituency, etc. Using all the
powerful
features of the program requires a far higher degree of
skill and staff
training. Plus, the cost of all this power is considerable.
For the the database functions I use, and recommend,
Filemaker, but don't
have the integration with the finance piece.

"I need to start looking at accounting software for
our small museum. I
am leaning towards Fund EZ, but would like to look at Quick
Books as
well. I am also aware that Raiser's Edge has a finance
portion, I would
love to hear from fellow ISF members their thoughts about
what they
consider is the best software for a npo finance team.

Have you looked at Sage's Peachtree it has fund accounting
and is
reasonable. I use MIP and I really love it but I don't
know what your
budget is for the software. Please feel free to contact me
offline.
