There was a fascinating article in yesterday's Chronicle of Higher Education
about the B-School Accreditor's (AACSB) efforts to push for research that
has a greater impact than some traditional research effort. I'm not sure
what the original context was but the draft report (available for comment at
http://www.aacsb.edu/Resource_Centers/Research/default.asp) has a lot of
interesting points that most applied disciplines should be thinking about.
