I have a very specific IT need.

I am working on a project that involves a web community and a private chat application.

The chat/IM application need to be web-based -- like Meebo.

But it needs to be on a platform that can be customized because it will also need to:

1. match people together to chat based on elements of their profile 2. allow for eavesdropping moderation

3. allow for both automatic and manual prompts to get conversations moving

I am looking for two kinds of recommendations:

a. chat platforms that might be the basis for building what we need

b. application development vendors who have experience or are all suited for figuring this out

Thanks!

Have been asked if this question and I don't know the answer and wondered if anyone else did.

As small community centre would like to be able to list their forthcoming events online and were interested in using a simple blog that their volunteers could keep up to date.

But this was when they thought that if say they titled a blog entry 1st September, and then later added one titled 13th August the blog would display them by the blog entry title date. I said as far as I knew all blogging software displayed by date of entry.

Also (and as someone who has never kept a blog I have to ask this as well) would the 'comment' function that most blogs can have enabled mean that it could be used by anyone wanting to ask about a particular event function as an online form? ie could the comment just be sent to them and not automatically displayed?

This is very much a group who have few resources to spare both in terms of time and money, and this seems like a simple solution, but should they be looking at some other automated web creator rather than a blog - or is there a free database type web creator?

JW, from my point of view that is not what BLOGS do best. Blogs are mostly just about adding sequential articles on a web site. Good if you want to get the words out but not a "real" content manager. But there are a couple of WordPress plug-ins that "manage your events and
appointments and display them to the world";. I haven't tried them but I bet they let you place a calendar view the left or right column.

They might consider using an online calendar that can list
the events as well as show them in calendar format; such as
a Google Groups calendar. This can be made public, and
people can then add the calendar to an RSS feed to be
updated on upcoming events, or add it to their google home
page .

How comments are handled is controlled by you when you set
up the blog. So you keep control of that. Set up a test
one at WordPress or Blogger and you'll see all the options.
