Dear ISF Colleagues,

One thing that I don't like about being an independent consultant is
working from home. I was thinking that I might try to barter with a
nonprofit or philanthropic organization: free desk space in return
for strategic tech advice.

I'd be interested in your thoughts about this, especially if you've
ever tried such a thing. It would have to be arranged carefully, so
that neither party experienced it as an unequal exchange.

Here's my blog article on this:

Any thoughts?

Many thanks and best regards from Deborah

I do that with one of my clients. We're doing it pretty loosy goosy for now, since I'm using the space fairly infrequently. We've both agreed to just see for a while and let each other know how it's going. We have a pre-existing relationship so the lines of communication are already good.

If your relationship is more formal to start with you might want to agree some kind of formula - 1 day in the office = 1/2hr of tech support or whatever. Perhaps this could be calculated based on $ value of rental space vs $value of tech support.

Good luck I agree about working at home.
