>>I'm in search of an online directory of national nonprofit umbrella

Club or the Conservation Law Foundation (although I think highly of
both!) - I'm looking for a directory of the national association of
environmental activism groups and the national associational of legal
advocates for the environment. Ditto for nonprofit networks,
coalitions, professional associations, and alliances for nonprofits
that focus on...for example, the arts, people of color, historic
preservation, research on specific diseases, education, economic
development, human rights, civic engagement, LGBTQ communities, animal
welfare...et cetera. Guidestar and Idealist are great, but they don't
have what I need. As another example, I'd say that I'm trying to find
the Nonprofit Technology Network (staff, mission, contact info),
rather than a list of every nonprofit technology assistance provider
in the U.S.>>

Dear ISF Colleagues,

I'm disappointed to report that I have not been able to find any such
online directory. You would think that the umbrella groups for each
sub-sector of the nonprofit world would want to be easily found, and
that the demand would be there from consumers of public information.
However, I have reluctantly concluded that it doesn't exist, or is
buried in obscurity.

I'd say that the opportunity exists for anyone who wants to do some
public service by creating and maintaining such an online directory!

Best regards from Deborah

I just got off the phone with Darien Heyman, head of the Craigslist Foundation, and they are looking to create a site that would be closer to what you are looking for, perhaps not exactly, but closer than anything else. You may want to talk to them about their "project entry point";.
