Dear ISF Colleagues,
I've returned from New Orleans, where I've been attending the annual
Nonprofit Technology Conference (also known as 08NTC). I'd love to
hear from other attendees - what were the highlights, the important
insights, and the things that you'd like to change about this event?
Please share your thoughts with us.
Best regards from Deborah

For me, the highlight for sure was meeting our very own Cyber Yenta in person.
This was really a great conference. NOLA was fun (music, food and drink), the people of NTEN are the best -- innovative, dedicated, etc. etc
I am going to write up details and post the slide deck for the sessions I did and will share that once it's up.

Deborah,
I would enjoy two things:
- a more technical IT track, or more technical IT sessions
- the conference has limited perspective and participation for super small budget orgs (~ $10k - 50k), though this has somewhat improved in recent years with a lot of sessions being generically applicable
Thanks!
Victor

Agreed on the more technical track request. Web strategy is great, but I'm looking at backup/Disaster Recovery projects, virtualization and VOIP/Videoconferencing at my org, and there was little on those topics.
I've asked a few of my friends at Techsoup why they don't put on a conference that aligns better to the content of their message boards. I mean, Net 2.0 is groovy and all, but, when I think of Techsoup, I think of the place where I can get Microsoft and Cisco donations. Putting on a conference that speaks to the questions that their customers bring up in the forums would be a natural; and it would fill that gap.
BTW, I blogged on my NTC experience at http://techcafeteria.com/blog.

Highlight of my trip? Meeting you in person, of course!
Besides that, this was my first NTC and I have to say it was the BEST conference I have ever been to. At most professional conferences I go to, there's a "stiffness" in the air, for lack of a better word. You do your thing, exchange a few business cards, socialize in the hallway and that's about it. At NTC there was such a feeling of connection between everyone (and no, it wasn't just through all the Tweets). I can't think of a single conversation I had in those 3 days that I didn't learn from and thoroughly enjoy. All the sessions I attended except for one were really good.

I have to agree with Victor, and I think I even said so in a number of spots. There's a heavy emphasis on projects that require a consultant, a large staff/budget or both. I got a lot out of the information, but only to find out what we might be able to do in a few years. Not now.

I too would like to see a more technical track, as I'm also wrestling with disaster recovery/business continuity, virtualization, intrusion detection, etc, as well as building online communities and the like. I loved everything I experienced but found the conference weighted more toward web 2.0 than my immediate needs.
