Hi: I have a free, localized np resource network. One of
its features is a database of services. I would like the
service address to be mapped when people enter their
addresses. Does anyone know of an existing product?
Thanks, Nancy

I'd probably need more information on what your doing, but
if you just want the addresses to display as pinpoints on a
map, then you could use any of the free web-based tools,
like GoogleMaps, YahooMaps, etc. They accept data in a
number of ways, so mostly you just need an API key, and a
preferred method for tying the data to the map.
If your using a software based application the same thing
can be said, except typically, you'd be exporting addresses
from one database and importing them into another. But
information on what you want--plain old maps or data
analysis based on GPS, what software currently stores the
data, etc. would all be useful.

Most of these answers to these questions seem to revolve
around if you know enough programming it is a pretty simple
problem to solve. Which is true.
I think what is needed is more of an application that just
solves the problem, without the user needing to know a lot.
We've built out part of an easy solution with CiviCRM and
Drupal. Currently, you can just put contacts into your
CiviCRM database and then pick any contact(s) to map with a
push of a button. Doesn't address the question though.
Right now, one of the big efforts in the open source
community is to create a generic thing-finder. Think of
something like techfinder.org except with more
functionality. All the building blocks are in place and you
can hire a consultant to build a *finder application for you
pretty quickly and easily and relatively cheaply. If folks
out there invest, please release your project in an open
source format so we can leverage your investment to benefit
the sector.
What we don't have is an application that will just allow
people to put up full featured resource directories. If
anyone is interested in such a project, please drop me a
line.
