Once again I could use the collective wisdom of this group.
I am trying to set up a user to remotely connect to office
PC, and print locally (i.e., if the user is called
"client", the printout of any remote session can
be redirected to client's printer -- not to the "host
" computer which gets controlled during the remote
session.) Both sides have Windows XP Pro, and the
"host" PC has RDC enabled and running, and users
configured to use RDC.
I connect through our VPN, and then launch the RDC instance.
I am able to get the RDC working -- can log in remotely,
control applications, and do everything else as if I were at
the controlled PC -- except print. I have tried it with
various user configurations (user logs onto domain; user
doesn't log onto domain; user is a local user; user is not a
local user; etc..) I just can't seem to get it to do the
printer redirection. I think the crux of the matter is in
how the users are defined/configured under the Remote
Desktop Connection parameters.
Any help greatly appreciated.

I don't know if there's a feature in remote desktop to
perform what you're asking but, I would try sharing the
printer on the local computer and then adding it to the
remote computer as a network printer, that way, when the
remote computer prints to the mapped printer it'll print
locally. Remember, they are technically all on the same
internal network including all the peripherals. Seemingly
you're going in circles but once it's setup the process
should be easy and natural. Hope that helps.

Hi Dave,
Are you doing the following?
How To Make a Local Printer Available During a Connection to
a Remote
Desktop in Windows XP Professional http://support.microsoft.com/default
.aspx?scid==kb;en-us;312135&sd==tech
If so, what kind of printer is it? I seem to recall that
certain types
of local printers would not be redirected in a remote
desktop session.
HTH,
Zac

We use Terminal Services on Windows Server 2003 and
encountered very similar problems printing locally.
We ended installing the "RDP Engine" from
ThinPrint.com.
While this version is specific for Windows Server 2003,
ThinPrint offers a version specifically for Windows XP
called "RDP Engine XP".
I haven't tried the version for Windows XP, but we've been
very happy with the Windows Server 2003 version.
More details on "RDP Engine XP": http://www
.thinprint.com/?s=4083&lc=61
Good luck.
