Zac,
Thanks for the fax service roundup!
I've been using eFax for a long time and it has its ups and
downs.
Ups:
It is fast and convenient. It has software that installs as
a printer and can also be used standalone. You can
generate the faxes within its program or by opening your
document in any application and "printing" it to
eFax. You send the resulting faxes via email.
You can send a quick cover page by itself, you can send it
with the
associated documents, or you can send the documents by
themselves.
Received faxes come in via email and can be pdf file
attachments - easy to view, print, or forward to others.
Downs:
On the downside it is a bit expensive for those who send
just a few pages - $12.95 a month for the basic service plus
a per page cost. That comes to more than $150 a year just
for the service. They also have a free receive-only
service, though, which might be quite handy for some folks.
The send files are in .efx format, which requires their
viewer. So if you archive your sent faxes you have to keep
their viewer to see the docs you sent, or figure out how to
convert them to another format.
Occasionally their service has been down for hours at a
time. The only way you know this is if you remember to note
that you didn't get a confirming email that your fax went
through.
I checked out Maxemail, the service you use, and have signed
up for their free 30 day trial membership. I see plusses
and minuses -
Ups:
It is cheap! Much less expensive for the basic service -
$14.95 for a whole year plus a per page on sent faxes.
Incoming faxes can also arrive as PDF's.
Outgoing faxes are sent by simply attaching up to 3
supported documents to an email file and sending it to them,
or alternatively by accessing their website to send.
The sent documents remain in your sent email folder in their
original form - not a proprietary form.
You can also use the number for voicemails that get
converted to email attachments and are sent to you.
It will support cover pages.
Downs:
Minor: You can send cover pages but not from a built-in fax
generator
program that will send cover pages, either with or without
the attached documents. If you wish to send a cover page
then it should be as one of the files, or the first page of
one of the files, that you send, or you include the
information in the text part of the email you send Maxemail.
Text in the message and subject line get converted to a
cover page.
I look forward to trying it out - it is far less expensive
than eFax.
Cheers,
Rol
