Folks:
Slightly off the technological path, but I was wondering if
anyone familiar
with IRS rules might help with the following problem I
received from a
reader:
Our volunteer fire/rescue department has had a policy of
compensating
members for expenses on a per call basis. I find that this
compensation has
generally covered only part of my expenses of operating my
personal vehicle
on fire and rescue calls.
Apparently, the IRS has ruled that this must end. We thought
that we would
then switch to tracking our mileage and apply the $0.445 per
mile mileage
allowance that all companies are allowed to use in
compensating their
employees for use of their personal vehicles. Wrong again.
Apparently the
IRS only allows volunteers to claim $0.14 per mile.
Anyone have any suggestions on a) the specific issue of
reimbursing
volunteers for mileage/vehicle costs per IRS rules, or b)
good IRS
information resources for nonprofit / volunteer
organizations?
