I had hoped things would be stable enough for a 1.0 release in January,
but we're just not there yet. So I'm adopting the Id Software moto of
"It'll be ready when it's ready" with the note that it will hopefully
be ready sometime this year and that's the focus of the work that's
being done.

For what it's worth, Steve, I think this is an appropriate approach.
After all in a case like this there are no true deadlines (I mean other
than the inevitable "sooner would be better than later"), and so if you
set a date and meet it (or even beat it), that doesn't really gain you
anything tangible, but if you set a date and miss it and people are
waiting in the wings that can be discouraging.
While not having any set date at all doesn't exactly _encourage_ those
who would be so discouraged by missing a date, it at least doesn't
present the opportunity to "fail" when there's no real need to make it a
challenge in the first place.
So I think just stating "It's ready when it's ready" is responsible and
appropriate for the public image of an Io 1.0 release. I would make one
additional suggestion, though: Since there's no specific date to wait
for, some tangible notion of progress for the outside community might be
nice. I'd suggest updating the iolanguage.com news/blog more often with
a little more substantive information, even if it's tiny, brief updates,
simply to give the general public a sense that things are still moving
forward (especially when there's no set 1.0 release date).
It might be encouraging to those who are waiting for an Io 1.0 release
to sink their teeth into it to see more explicitly mentioned activity;
for instance, there have only been two blog updates in the last three
months. This might give people the impression that things are
completely stagnating, which is certainly not the case, but to those who
aren't plugged into the mailing list/IRC channel enough to see what's
going on might not realize that.
